Artificial Hair Straightening Methods
The artificial hair straightening methods are as follows:
Chemical Hair Relaxing
This is a method to straighten the hair using chemicals. The type and strength of the chemicals used depends on the condition of the hair e.g. dyed hair might need a milder chemical than strong uncoloured hair.
The chemical hair straightening process is as follows:
  • A protective treatment cream is applied to the scalp and hair if the hair is damaged, this cream is usually a petroleum based cream
  • The hair relaxing formula is applied to straighten the hair texture and remove any curls.
  • After a certain amount of time the treatment chemicals are washed out of the hair with shampoo.
  • A neutralizing treatment is applied to the hair to restore the hair and restore its pH balance, bringing the effects of the relaxant to a halt.
  • A conditioner is applied to the hair after which the hair is dried and styled, resulting in straight hair that usually needs extra care (conditioners rich in protein) to keep it healthy looking.

The chemicals used in this process are:
  • Sodium Hydroxide, the strongest hair relaxant, is used on strong and healthy hair. It penetrates the hair shaft and breaks the cross bonds in the core of the hair, removing all elasticity causing the hair to curl.
  • Guanine Hydroxide is less strong than sodium hydroxide but a conditioning hair treatment before straightening it is still advised.
  • Ammonium Thioglycolate is the least damaging kind of all hair relaxants even though a hair softening treatment with a conditioner is necessary before applying the chemical.
Using Straightening Balms
A straightening balm can be used as a home treatment to make curly hair straighter, usually this balm or spray is used in combination with a blow dryer or straightening iron. The balm is sprayed on to towel dry or dry hair, after which it is brushed through and blow dried or ironed. Most balms will leave the hair looking shiny and healthy. The result will stay till the next washing.
Another Method
Another way to straighten with or without chemicals is to use a so-called double hair brush. The hair is conditioned, and towel dry or dry hair is placed between bristles, starting close to the scalp and combing down. This procedure for straight hair styles takes a lot of time depending on hair length, but is not very damaging to hair. The result is temporary. These best hair straighteners can be purchased in nearly any beauticians shop.

How Effective are these Treatments in Keeping Hair Straight Permanently

Hair straightening procedure should ideally always be performed by a professional hair stylist. Straight hair styles are easy to maintain but difficult to create if one does not exactly know what to do and how to possibly combine chemicals in hair straighteners.
